This description reflects the role of Director, Network Engineering within the Enterprise Engineering & Architecture (EE&A) group.
Job Summary
The Director, Network Engineering provides strategic and operational support to our faculty and the HBS mission to educate leaders who make a difference in the world. The Director will lead the development of the overall network strategy and manage its execution, in alignment with EE&A’s responsibility for strategy, architecture, and maintenance of software, compute, storage, and network solutions.
As a member of the EE&A management team, the Director collaborates with colleagues and campus stakeholders to provide technical leadership and network solutions for today and the future. The position oversees the wired and wireless campus network environment, extending to multiple cloud environments and remote campuses, with a multiyear network strategy and daily operations and projects managed accordingly.
The Director will serve as a key advisor to HBS IT and departments, providing vision, roadmaps, and budget plans for network and telecommunications needs. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience designing and supporting large, complex network environments.
Job-Specific Responsibilities
Direct the network team and vendors’ staff in support of daily operational work and project deliverables
Provide network technology leadership, vision, and solutions that address business needs in collaboration with IT colleagues and HBS departments
Develop, document, maintain, and manage a multiyear network strategy including a lifecycle management program
Develop and communicate annual operating and multiyear capital budgets aligned with the network strategy and manage activities to align with the budget
Ensure ongoing documentation of critical network and telecommunications assets, processes, and procedures
Manage vendor relationships and contracts for hardware, software, and services and ensure execution against contracts
Collaborate with the University’s enterprise networking team to align strategies and services for network and voice services
Contribute to the cloud planning program to develop monitoring and management systems for network reliability and performance in a hybrid multi‑cloud environment
Participate in appropriate University and School governance committees to align network solutions with future business goals
Lead by example, set clear goals and training objectives for team members, and reinforce HBS IT values
Build strong relationships with HBS departments to develop innovative solutions using industry best practices and trends
Ensure HBS systems and data are secure and protected according to Harvard policies and industry standards
Complete other responsibilities as assigned
Working Conditions
Additional support outside of regular hours may occasionally be required
Availability by personal cell phone during business hours and occasionally off-hours (stated stipend)
Participation in a shared 24x7x365 on-call rotation with other IT staff
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
Minimum of 7 years of post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Supervisory experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
The following are preferred:
Strong working knowledge of network technologies and cloud connectivity, with experience in planning, design, and implementation of large-scale network environments
Technical command of Cisco network switches, routers and protocols, wireless deployments, Palo Alto firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, and fiber deployments
Ability to explain complex technical concepts effectively to varying levels of technical expertise
Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
Strong oral, written, and presentation communication skills
Demonstrated ability to manage a technical staff and lead, influence, and motivate others
Enterprise networking experience in a higher education setting
Exposure to networking connectivity into cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, and Oracle)
Infrastructure experience including design, deployment, lifecycle management, planning, and operations
Experience developing and managing operational and capital budgets, including vendor contracts and licensing
Certificates and Licenses
Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) – preferred
Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) in Security, Enterprise Infrastructure, and/or Wireless – preferred
Additional Information
Standard Hours/Schedule: 40 hours per week
Compensation Range/Rate: 150,000 – 160,000, commensurate with experience

Other Information: This is a hybrid position with remote and onsite work at the Boston, MA campus. Staff are expected to be onsite a minimum of 3 days per week. Specific hours and days onsite are determined by business needs and may change with notice. Interviews may be virtual or in-person.
Work Format Details
Position is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options. Remote work must be performed within the Harvard Registered Payroll States. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Candidates must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
