Overview Harvard Business School (HBS) IT is a nimble, innovative, strategic partner who crafts, delivers and supports technology solutions for the HBS community. This position reports to the Senior Managing Director, Enterprise Engineering & Architecture (EE&A) and leads the development and execution of the network strategy to support the school’s mission. The Director, Network Engineering will be responsible for the wired and wireless campus network environment, which extends to multiple cloud environments and remote campuses, and for developing a multiyear network strategy aligned with business needs. The role involves collaboration with campus stakeholders to provide technical leadership, support, and network solutions for today and the future. Job Summary The Director, Network Engineering provides strategic and operational support to faculty and supports HBS IT in meeting its mission to educate leaders who make a difference in the world. The role will contribute vision, roadmaps, and budget plans for network and telecommunications needs, and will serve as a key advisor to HBS IT and departments to ensure network stability and growth. Responsibilities Direct the network team and vendors’ staff in support of daily operational work as well as project deliverables Provide network technology leadership, vision, and solutions that address business needs, partnering with IT colleagues and HBS departments Develop, document, maintain, and manage a multiyear network strategy including a lifecycle management program Develop and communicate annual operating and multiyear capital budgets that align with the network strategy Ensure ongoing documentation of critical network and telecommunications assets, processes, and procedures Manage vendor relationships and contracts for hardware, software and services Collaborate with the University’s enterprise networking team to align strategies and services Contribute to cloud planning to monitor and manage network reliability and performance in a hybrid multi-cloud environment Participate in university and school governance committees to align network solutions with business goals Lead by example, set goals and training objectives for team members, and reinforce HBS IT values Build relationships with departments to develop innovative solutions using industry best practices Ensure HBS systems and information are secure in accordance with Harvard policies and standards Complete other responsibilities as assigned Working Conditions Additional support outside of regularly scheduled hours may be required Must be available by personal cell phone during business hours and occasionally off-hours (stipend provided) Must participate in a shared 24x7x365 on-call rotation with other IT staff Qualifications Basic Qualifications: Minimum of 7 years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience Supervisory experience Additional Qualifications and Skills: Strong working knowledge of network technologies and cloud connectivity; experience with planning, design, and implementation of large-scale networks Experience with Cisco switches/routers, wireless deployments, Palo Alto firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, and fiber deployments Ability to convey complex technical concepts to varied audiences Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills Strong oral, written, and presentation communication skills Experience managing a technical staff and leading, influencing, and motivating others Enterprise networking experience in a higher education setting Exposure to networking connectivity into cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, Oracle) Infrastructure design, deployment, lifecycle management, planning, and operations Experience developing and managing operational and capital budgets; managing vendor contracts and licensing Certificates and Licenses (Preferred): CCNP CCIE in Security, Enterprise Infrastructure, and/or Wireless Additional Information Standard Hours/Schedule: 40 hours per week Compensation Range/Rate: $150,000 - $160,000, commensurate with experience Visa Sponsorship Information: Harvard University is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position Pre-Employment Screening: Identity, Criminal Work Arrangement: Hybrid position; onsite presence required at least 3 days per week at the Boston campus, with scheduling subject to business needs Benefits Harvard offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support work-life balance and wellbeing, including: Generous paid time off including parental leave Medical, dental, and vision coverage from day one Retirement plans with university contributions Wellbeing resources and mental health support Support for families and caregivers Professional development opportunities including tuition assistance Commuter benefits, campus perks Learn more about these and additional benefits on the Benefits & Wellbeing Page.
